Bantay Kalikasan joined the annual Green SONA (State of Nature Assessment) headed by Green Convergence for Safe Food, Healthy Environment and Sustainable Economy. The forum had a theme of “Biodiversity in the Face of Development” where environmentalists, civil society, and representatives of government and the private sector gathered to assess the environment from a particular perspective.

Department of Energy Secretary Carlos Petilla spoke of DOE’s programs, focusing on renewable energy. “Certainly, in the Department of Energy, we have not forgotten the environment. We simply have to complete a balance because in the end, environment, progress, development, and population growth, these are all problems we are facing.” says Sec. Petilla. “It is my job that after my term,” he adds, “to make sure we move forward to development and environment.”

Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon Paje spoke of immense value of biodiversity and the services provided by the ecosystem habitats of wildlife while presenting the threats to this natural resource and how his department is addressing them.

Foundation for Philippine Environment Executive Director Godofredo Villapando spoke of the status of the National Greening Program that is meant to improve the vegetation cover of our country and its challenges. While Climate Change Commissioner Naderev ‘Yeb’ Saño emphasized the close relationship between the loss of biodiversity and climate change.
