The Philippine Rice Research Institute (PRRI), under the Department of Agriculture (DA), partnered with ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya’s Bantay Kalikasan program to provide two (2) tons of brown rice, and educate its benefits, to four hundred (400) indigent families from thirteen (13) barangays in Paco, Manila last January 25, 2017.

Each family received five (5) kilos of healthy brown rice as PRRI, the DA and Bantay Kalikasan sought to promote the consumption of this variant as a healthier alternative to white rice; and to support farmers throughout the country producing this grain. These families were chosen as their daily nutritional requirements are not consistently met – and with the goal of PRRI and DA, through the their #BeRiceponsible Campaign, to bring down the price of brown rice to make it more affordable to the mass market, this project sought to begin the habit of consuming healthier grains to more and more Filipinos throughout the country, especially to those who need it most.

According to the PRRI, in 2008, 7.5 billion pesos worth of rice goes to waste each year; which can feed approcimately 2.5 million individuals. Thus, the #BeRiceponsible campaign of PRRI aims to encourage every Filipino to be part of rice sub-sufficiency. Brown rice is an excellent source of Vitamin B-6, magnesium, fiber, among many others, compared to white rice. Diseases such as diabetes, colon cancer, hypertension and heart diseases can also be prevented by eating organic brown rice.

As per Ms. Jen Santos, Program Director of Bantay Kalikasan, “Ang Bantay Kalikasan ay natutuwa at nagpapasalamat sa Department of Agriculture and Philippine Rice Research Institute dahil sila ang aming naging partner sa kanilang kampanya para i-promote ang pagkain ng bigas at hindi pagsasayang nito at ang pag-ka-campaign nila towards eating brown rice”.
