ABS-CBN Foundation’s environment arm, Bantay Kalikasan, joined the 6th Recyclables Collection of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SMBA) held at the Subic Bay Free Port Zone.

The biannual Recyclables Event enjoins all the companies and organizations to dispose different recyclables and hazardous wastes like plastics, papers, electronic wastes, used oils, used lead acid batteries, busted bulb/ lamps, tires, expired medicines, needles, used clothes, and rubber shoes/slippers.

This event is handled by the Ecology Center, a unit in SBMA under the office of the Chairman, in-charge of protecting the natural resources and environment within the Freeport Zone.

Bantay Kalikasan upholds the advocacy of recycling hazardous wastes through its projects Bantay Baterya (recycling used lead acid batteries) and Bantay Langis (recycling used oils). In ensuring the proper process of recovering and recycling these wastes, BK has a long term partnership with Oriental and Motolite Marketing Corporation and Genetron International Marketing. Motolite is the proper treater to properly recover and recycle used lead acid batteries while Genetron is the partner treater to properly recover and recycle used oils.

“Importante na ma-turnover natin ang mga batteries na ito sa accredited treater ng used batteries. Hindi lang siya dapat itinatapon  o itinatabi sa mga kabayanahan dahil ito ay hazardous at pwede makapag contaminate sa soil and water..”  -  Rita Regalado (ULAB Supervisor, Oriental & Motolite Marketing Corporation)

(It is important to turn over these batteries to an accredited treater of used batteries.  They should not be carelessly thrown or kept at home because these are hazardous and may contaminate the soil and water.)

“Ang mga event na ganito ay malaking tulong saamin na  transporter at treater at pati narin sa mga generators kasi hindi na sila mag a-apply ng permit to transport. Any time of the day dito sa event na ito ay pwede lang nila dalhin dito ang mga used oil.  Yung mga used oil na dinadala dito sa recyclables event ay may maayos na proseso sa Genetron.  Makakasiguro pa sila na wala kaming landfill.” – Engr. Joselyn Panen, (Technical Sales Director, Genetron

(Events like these are a great help to us transporter/treaters and also to the generators because they do not need to apply for (individual) permits to transport.  Generators can just bring their used oil any time of the day during the event.  Used oil that are brought to the recyclables event are properly processed by Genetron.  The can be assured that we do not bring anything to the landfill.)

Bantay Kalikasan is the beneficiary of the monetary value of these hazardous and recyclable wastes from some of the companies who participated. One of them is the Zoobic Zafari. They donated their used batteries, plastic bottles and cartons.

The monetary value for the donated used oil and used lead-acid batteries will benefit the environmental initiatives of Bantay Kalikasan as it also celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

“Of course I know iyong mga proceeds naman nito, with the help of Bantay Kalikasan ay may patutunguhan naman lahat. Kami sa Zoobic Safari ay nag ta-try narin mag reduce ng use of plastics. First time namin maka join at hopefully next year makapunta ulit kami to join this kind of event. “ -

( “Of course we know that with the help of Bantay kalikasan, the proceeds of these will be in good hands. We in Zoobic Safari are already starting to reduce the use of plastics. This is our first time to join this event and hopefully we will be able to join again next year.”)

A portion of the proceeds of the Recyclables Event will benefit the different ecotourism sites of Bantay Kalikasan nationwide.

Aside from the opportunity given to companies to donate their wastes, the SBMA Recyclables Event also became an educational gathering for people to learn how to properly dispose the waste.
