ABS-CBN Foundation (AFI) once again proved that they are working in the service of the Filipino as AFI-Bantay Kalikasan’s Lola Sayong Eco-Surf Camp: Beyond the Board won in the Public Responsibility category at the Lopez Achievement Awards 2019.

Lola Sayong Eco-Surf Camp is one of the eco-tourism sites of ABS-CBN Foundation-Bantay Kalikasan in Gubat, Sorsogon that was initiated by the late chairman of AFI, Gina Lopez. Aside from being a tourist attraction, it is also an avenue for people to share their passion for surfing and to be active environmental stewards. What makes this program special is the people’s willingness to give back to their community through their efforts geared towards environmental protection, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere in the surf camp. The Leave No Trace Policy, ban on single-use plastic, use of biodegradable materials inside the camp (from the restaurant to accommodations) and encouragement for tourists to participate in the camp’s environmental efforts show their commitment as environmental stewards. The “No School, No Surf” policy, on the other hand, is to compel young surfers to pursue schooling and use their earnings from surfing to support their studies.

“Para sa Diyos, para sa bayan at para sa kalikasan ang tagumpay na ito. Inaalay namin ito sayo, Ma’am Gina Lopez. Ma’am, kayang kaya at pwedeng pwede pala. Baon naming lahat ng aral at inspirasyon mo sa aming paglalakbay. Patuloy naming pagyayabungin ang punla ng pangarap at pagmamahal na iniwan mo sa amin,” said Joy Endraca, Sorsogon Site Specialist of AFI-Bantay Kalikasan.

(This achievement is for God, for our country, and for the environment. We dedicate this award to you, Ma’am Gina Lopez. Everything is possible and achievable. We carry with us all the learnings and inspiration you instilled in us. We will continue to cultivate the dream and love that you left for us.)

Gina Lopez was also given a Posthumous Award that was received by her brother and the current host of G Diaries, Mr. Ernie Lopez. "It’s an honor to be chosen to accept the Posthumous Award on behalf of my sister," said Ernie Lopez in his speech as he received the award.

Gina Lopez has touched the hearts of many Filipinos. Her commitment to create a better and greener world left an impact on everyone. “I’ve never been personally exposed to anyone with a pure heart as with my sister, she truly has no other agenda than to help who are in need,” Lopez added. Teary eyed, he finished his speech by sharing a Bible verse from Isaiah that reminds him of his sister, “And if you give yourself to the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then your life will rise in darkness and your gloom will become like midday. And the Lord will continually guide you and satisfy your desire in scorched places and give strength to your bone and you will be like a watered garden and like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.”

The Lopez Achievement Awards (LAA) is an award-giving body of the Lopez Group that annually recognizes outstanding teams or exemplary individual achievements that contribute to business objectives and exemplify the Lopez Group values.
