UAAP-related topics trend worldwide
UAAP Women’s Volleyball proved it is in a league of its own after topics related to its Final Four matches generated almost 3 million mentions on Twitter to dominate the trending topics list in the Philippines, with some topics also making it to the Worldwide trends list.
A total of 2,858,844 posts were made from May 4 to 5, 2019 covering the Saturday match between the FEU Lady Tamaraws and league-leader Ateneo Lady Eagles and the Sunday showdown of defending champion DLSU Lady Spikers and the UST Golden Tigresses. Among the most tweeted hashtags were #UAAPSeason81VolleyBall, #FueledbyAnimo, and #KamiNaman.
At one point on Sunday (May 5), all 20 trending topics in the Philippines were UAAP volleyball related, including names of players Jolina (Dela Cruz), (Des) Clemente, Sisi Rondina, (Caitlin) Viray, while many were also talking about DLSU’s Coach Ramil (De Jesus) and ADMU.
Some UAAP Volleyball-related hahstags and topics even trended worldwide during the Final Four matches last May 4, 5, and 8, including #WeAllBleedBlue, #OneMoreTimeFeu, and ADMU vs UST.
UAAP volleyball games regularly generate huge online buzz with the continuous rise in popularity of the sport of volleyball that spiked with the Ateneo-DLSU rivalry featuring superstars like Alyssa Valdez, Mika Reyes, and Abi Marano. The league has never looked back since, with the likes of MVP frontrunner Sisi Rondina, super rookie Eya Laure, power-hitter Kat Tolentino and court leader Bea De Leon picking up from where they left off.
ABS-CBN Sports digital head Mico Halili expects the fans to cook up a storm on Twitter again with the beginning of the UAAP Volleyball Finals tomorrow with the NU Bulldogs and FEU Tamaraws fighting for the Men’s Division Title and the Ateneo Lady Eagles and UST Golden Tigresses in the Women’s Division championship round.
“UAAP volleyball is an emotional experience for fans and players. Long rallies are packed with emotion. Strong spikes are packed with emotion. Every point is an epic battle. When you have an intense sport that has the best engaged fans, you have a winning sports experience on social media,” Halili said.
Don’t miss the Volleyball Women’s and Men’s division Finals, which will air LIVE on S+A, S+A HD, LIGA, LIGA HD with streaming available at sports.abs-cbn.com, iWant Sports, this Saturday (May 11). Starting off festivities will be the Men’s Finals match between NU and FEU at 12 nn followed by the Women’s Finals game of ADMU and UST at 4 pm.
