The much-awaited comeback film of one of Philippine cinema’s most notable actors, Aga Muhlach — the blockbuster family drama “Seven Sundays” — marks its premiere on Cinema One this Sunday (April 15), 8pm.
This humorous yet tearjerking film includes a star-studded ensemble aside from Aga — Christine Reyes, Dingdong Dantes, Enrique Gil, and Ronaldo Valdez – from the direction of blockbuster filmmaker Cathy Garcia-Molina.
It features four Bonifacio siblings Allan (Aga), Brian (Dingdong), Cha (Christine), and Dex (Enrique) who all have to return to their childhood home and face the news that their father, Manuel (Ronaldo), is suffering from cancer and only has about two months left to live.
Manuel then requests his children to spend his last Sundays with him, and the estranged siblings inevitably get to look back at their younger years and recall the painful events that led to their falling-out. Will they overcome their unresolved issues or remain at odds? Will their father finally get his wish?
According to Pablo Tariman of philstar.com, there are so many commendable things about the film. He said, “the writing is excellent and perceptive, the ensemble acting is real… This is one story where everyone is at his best and truly in character.”
He also wrote about how it appeals to the emotions of every home. “The film appeals directly to the heart and soul of every family. One has not seen a family picture that teaches love and forgiveness with heart-rending dispatch.”
Meanwhile, Rito Asilo of Inquirer.net said that “Aga’s latest dramatic outing is a tough row to hoe” stressing that the actor achieved a “triumphant comeback after a five-year hiatus.”
Oggs Cruz of rappler.com, meanwhile, commended the film’s fresh appeal. “In a marketplace that is mostly crowded by repetitive romances, ‘Seven Sundays’ feels like a very welcome gush of fresh air,” he said.
