ABS-CBN’S “THE PROMISE” IS FIRST PH DRAMA IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

The popular Philippine telenovela “The Promise,” a story about love transcending social divides and overcoming all obstacles, will be the first Philippine show to air in the Dominican Republic after a deal between ABS-CBN, the Philippines’ leading entertainment and media company and Color Vision was concluded at the 2019 NATPE in Miami.

“The Promise” is the most successfully distributed Philippine drama series in the global arena as it was sold to 16 countries and remains the only internationally adapted Filipino drama, with format buys by Asia and Latin America. It will start airing in the Dominican Republic in March on Color Visión Canal 9.

Wincess Lee, sales head for Latin America and Asia, says the deal is a good way to start the year. She said, "We are very happy that Dominican Republic's Color Vision chose our bestselling drama "La Promesa" or "The Promise" as the first introduction to content from our side of the world. This is a huge testament to how our content can indeed transcend boundaries.”

“LatAm continues to be an important growth area for us. Since ABS-CBN has tapped into LatAm, we have also licensed our dramas in Mexico, Colombia and Peru, and in addition, some 13 films had already been sold to the region. We're looking at different ways to expand here. As an example, we're currently having some scripted format discussions as well. We have very strong storylines and characters in revenge drama Wildflower and in Betrayal, which puts the spotlight on marriage and the discontentment and misunderstandings that come with it. These are sure to captivate audiences and these are just some of the dramas we're offering to the market,” added Lee.

The original series, which was produced by ABS-CBN in 2001 and starred Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa, was so popular in the Philippines that it was remade in 2015 for a new generation of audiences.

The remake starred Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo, whose recent film, “The Hows of Us,” was brought to MIPCOM last year, and currently holds the record for the highest grossing local film in the Philippines.

Aside from a stellar cast, the Philippine remake of “The Promise” also offers top caliber production with scenes shot in different grand locations to give the audience an unforgettable viewing experience the same way the original version did years back.

Directed by its original directors Rory Quintos, Olivia Lamasan, and original writer Dado Lumibao, the 2015 remake revolves around the promise of true and never-ending love from two generations- the love story of Amor (Jodi Sta. Maria) and Eduardo (Ian Veneracion), who were separated by Claudia (Angelica Panganiban), and the young couple brought together by destiny, Angelo (Padilla) and Yna (Bernardo).

The show’s original version is a landmark series on Philippine television, raising the bars of locally produced soap operas and being the first to give Filipino audiences a cinematic experience right in their very homes.
