A more exciting way to learn to read awaits learners with the new season of the Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc.'s (KCFI) reading series “Wikaharian,” which a senator described as a meaningful step toward nurturing young Filipinos’ love for reading and culture.

During the show’s launch on June 26 at the Rockwell Business Center in Pasig City, Senator Loren Legarda emphasized the importance of “incorporating culture into education to help shape the next generation.”

“The ‘Wikaharian’ series is a testament to our commitment to nurturing a generation of Filipino learners who are not only literate but also culturally grounded and socially compassionate,” said Legarda, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Culture and the Arts.

Following the success in terms of reading skill acquisition of the first 80-episode “Wikaharian” series for grade 1 and 50 episodes for grade 2, the new season 25 episodes for grade 2 deepens its commitment by offering fresh content that both entertains and educates. Each episode is carefully designed to support reading comprehension, vocabulary building, and cultural awareness—tools that are essential for lifelong learning.

KCFI president and executive director Rina Lopez emphasized the urgency of strengthening early reading proficiency nationwide.

“It is essential that our young learners develop the necessary skills in reading, given that these dictate their ability to learn at higher grade levels,” said Rina.

Created in collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and aligned with the Department of Education’s K to 12 curriculum, “Wikaharian” harnesses a vibrant mix of storytelling based on local folklores, local songs, and visual learning that is culture-based and art-based to make Filipino reading relatable, engaging, and accessible.

Hosted by real-life reading advocate teacher Michelle Agas, the series encourages young viewers to explore the richness of Filipino culture while building their foundational reading skills.

The launch gathered representatives from the Department of Education, NCCA, and other education and media stakeholders, underscoring a shared commitment to improving literacy and cultural awareness among early-grade learners.

“Wikaharian Grade 2” airs from Monday to Sunday at 8am, with replays at 8pm, on digital free TV Knowledge Channel, cable, and direct-to-home satellite. It is also available via live stream on iWant and on the Knowledge Channel School Anywhere block on the Kapamilya Channel and A2Z.
